STARWIND VIRTUAL SAN PRICING LICENSE
So when say doing VDI projects you're forced to license something like Nexenta Connect just to create a failover NFS shares to store you VDI profiles and have fault tolerant SMB3 file server for your clients. With StarWind you pay only when you run either out of capacity or out of IOPS (or both :).ģ) StarWind does SMB3, NFSv4 and iSCSI while VMware is locked with private data paths. VMware cannot do this so you basically add $5K every time you add extra vSphere node into your cluster.

For SMBs and especially ROBOs when you have 10s or 100s of installations getting dual 10 GbE switches, 3 eMLC flash drives and throwing 2 sockets * 3 nodes = $15K into Virtual SAN software is quite expensive.Ģ) StarWind supports asymmetric configs when just few nodes can feed shared storage to cluster. So hardware footprint for StarWind can be VERY small and for VMware it's moderate (which is quite understandable, VMware had recently moved 6->8 sockets for their "entry level customer" portrait). VMware Virtual SAN starts with 3-nodes, switch and flash into every node. There are many differences:ġ) StarWind can do 2-node setup with no flash and no switch. For more options I'd call StarWind sales rep on phone and ask telling about your a) uptime requirement b) plans to increase capacity c) budget and d) IOPS.īack to VMware Virtual SAN. Then you can do 2-way or 3-way replication in any combinations (may LUNs can be created). Easiest way would be license Unlimited and one Scale-Out node.

With 3 hosts you first need to decide: a) do you want 2-way replication or 3-way replication? (3-way replica allows you to use RAID0 on every node instead of RAID10 or RAID5/6 if you run LSFS, 3-way replication is much more faster on reads and it provides 99,9999% uptime compared to 99,99% 2-way replica does) b) do you want capacity-limited or capacity-unlimited licenses? 8TB and Unlimited are very close (if you have PDF near your eyes you can check). With StarWind you can effectively increase CPU and capacity with the different leverages.

See, StarWind is VERY different compared to VMware Virtual SAN or hyper-converged solutions: you DO NOT need to boost CPU and storage at the same time, so while it's not possible to use VMware Virtual SAN on say just two nodes of a six-node vSphere cluster it's absolutely possible with StarWind. Throwing in extra hypervisor node? Exiting capacity is not enough (or performance is not great as you'll be routing I/O over network)? License more storage on new node.

style setup and are willing to upgrade later or are true entry-level SMBs or ROBOs who need just a couple of VMs.ģ) That's the way you do "scale out" with us. Capacity-limited versions are just a polite way to give a discount to customers who're looking for some initial P.O.C.

Funny, but there are still quite a lot of ppl who use us either for Test & Development and are willing to apply for direct support so they don't want to go with a Free version *or* they don't need high uptime and are fine with a single-controller setup with no fault tolerance (and no write back cache officially allowed).Ģ) Majority of sales happen with "Unlimited" tag. Is there any reason to use this with customers on VMWare since they have their own flavor of this?įirst of all I need to say "sorry" as if you cannot get licensing idea from our Licensing Guide this means we did a bad job to describe what's there :( I'll think what could be improved and your feedback and ideas are welcomed :) PM me and I'll give you my direct corporate e-mail for communications if you don't feed comfortable to do it on a public forum.ġ) Yes, exactly.

I am mainly interested in this for customers running on Hyper-V. So if I had 3 hosts and 6 TB of data, I would need 3x Scale Out Node 8TB licenses? I am guessing the 2-node license is limited to 2 host servers, and if you have more than 2 host servers you need to buy Scale Out Node licenses, and then select the data amount that covers the amount of data you have. Virtual SAN Scale Out Node, comes in 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, or unlimited TB.

Virtual SAN 2-node, comes in 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, or unlimited TB.Stand-Alone Edition - I assume this is for a single node? Maybe for demo/testing?.On the quote request page, it shows several options: I am trying to get an idea of how StarWinds Virtual SAN is licensed and how it would be used in different scenarios.
